Re: Convert Flac to MP3 |
From FLAC to mp3? Use XMPlay
www.un4seen.com
Its a free, minimalist, indepedently produced music player with a lot of cool options. Flac plugin:

Note that you need LAME to convert anything to Mp3. Google it.
You can also use XMPlay to add a little bit of echo to your recordings if you like that.

This is what I have and use every time I convert flac files. It works extremely well.
*note: this will convert flac files to wav files... you can then use windows audio converter to convert these wav files to lossless wma files... I don't know if there is an easier way or a more "correct" way to go about it but this is what I do with flac files

This is what I use to convert shn files to wav files. Again, once I've converted shn to wav I use the windows audio converter to convert the wav files to lossless wma files. Don't know if it's right or wrong, but it's what I do.

Re: Convert Flac to MP3 |
i use switch for flac to mp3 and it can also do shn but you have to buy the upgrade for shn
http://www.nch.com.au/switch/plus.html most of the time i use trader's little helper for converting flac and shn's since i do most of my listening in wave format or winamp to play the shn/flac files
http://thor.prohosting.com/roh0205/ . trader's little helper is a nifty tool.

Take heed of what tigerbolt has to say on the matter. He knows as well if not better than anyone else.

Re: Convert Flac to MP3 |
tiger,
does switch convert the flac to mp3, or does it make a separate mp3 file from the flac? ie - is the flac file still there when you are done.

Re: Convert Flac to MP3 |
There are also free 3rd party plugins for the Nero 6 software at
www.afterdawn.com if you use that CD burning program. Free plugins for just about any other audio format that you might encounter too.
Just unzip them into your Nero plugins folder like you did with Win Amp and other media programs. Works like a charm for me...

Re: Convert Flac to MP3 |
D,
TB had previously recomended Switch and it is a great program. Every time I have used it the original file remains intact and a new converted file is created.
Most of the time I am converting flac/shn to wav for cd burning, but it should work the same for mp3 conversion.

Re: Convert Flac to MP3 |
Foobar 2000 can convert from/to almost anything very nicely (as well as do many other things). Very well supported program (see forums link).
http://www.foobar2000.org/
Open flac files in foobar, select, right click, select convert, then convert to: then in converter setup you'll want to select MP3 (lame). You'll also need to install the latest version of Lame (see link). Lame 3.97 is the latest stable release.
http://www.rarewares.org/mp3-lame-bundle.php
I use MP3 (Lame), "V2 new" as the quality. This is the lame recommended standard (that's what this archive uses for their lame files as well).
